Presented as part of Camden Council's Black History Season, Seeing the Potential brings Matthew Small's distinctive visual language into dialogue with a borough that has long informed his work.
It is an exhibition about visibility, identity and belonging, but also about possibility: the value that can be found in what is overlooked, and the extraordinary potential contained within both people and the everyday materials that surround us.
Alongside the exhibition, a series of creative collage portrait workshops will invite participants to explore these ideas through making. Using reclaimed and everyday materials, including household packaging and waste, participants will create portraits by matching different colours, textures and tones to pre-prepared tonal images. The workshops will encourage people of all ages to see the creative potential in discarded materials and transform the ordinary into something unexpected.
